Milli Majlis Adopted UNESCO Convention On Protection of Nonmaterial Cultural Heritage

Today, on October 2, the Azerbaijani Parliament Milli Majlis has adopted the UNESCO Convention On Protection of Nonmaterial Cultural Heritage. This document was discussed during the first sitting of the autumn's session of the Milli Majlis, Trend reports.

Giving a speech concerning the issue, Professor Nizami Jafarov, Chairman of the Permanent Commission of the Milli Majlis on Cultural Issues told that the World has a great experience on protection of monuments of material culture. However the technology on protection of nonmaterial ones, i. e. spiritual cultural monuments is very difficult issue, told Mr. Jafarov. The professor pointed out that the nonmaterial culture includes the language and expressions appeared as it has developed, the art of performance, certain traditions arisen from the social experience, ceremonies, and holidays, certain knowledge and experience, views, technologies of the nonmaterial creativity. The main purpose is that the states joined to

the convention should first of all inform the society about the character of the monuments of the nonmaterial culture, second spend funds to protect them, third establish international cooperation in this field. Natutrally that Azerbaijan`s joining the convention is a need. Since the spiritual culture of Azerbaijan is much richer, told Mr. Jafarov.

Speaking concerning the above-mentioned issue, MP Sabir Rustamkhanli told that we should make up a list of our nonmaterial heritage and send it to UNESCO. We should clarify the attitude toward the Azerbaijani language, folklore, traditions. It is necessary to remove all the embassies and representative offices of the international organizations from Ichari-Shahar. Caravans of cars will rapidly spoil Ichari-Shahar, told Mr. Rustamkhanli.

The other MPs told about the necessity on Azerbaijan`s joining the convention. Fazail Aghamali pointed out that owing to this convention, we can avert aggression aimed at our nonmaterial cultural heritage. Finally, as a result of the vote, the document was adopted.
