There are no Serious Threats for Georgia From Azerbaijan Georgian President

President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, on December 15 said that the Azerbaijan borders with Georgia impose less threat than borders with other neighboring countries. The statement was said in the opening ceremony of the new buildings of regional departments of Border Police of Georgia in Lagodekhi and Dedopliskaro (Kakhetia and East Georgia), Trend Special Correspondent reports.

The Georgian President called Azerbaijan as a friendly country. Despite this, Georgia needs to protect the borders in all directions, Saakashvili said.

This statement was a response to the anxiety of the opposition MP of the Georgian Parliament, who consider that Azerbaijan intends to catch up the Georgian historical monastic complex David Garedji, which is located in the disputed territory between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The Head of the Border Police of Georgia, Badri Bitsadze, briefed the media that the forces of the regional department of the border police of Lagodekhi controls 205-km section of the Georgian border with Russia and 50 km with Azerbaijan. The Border Police Department of Dedopliskaro defends the 305-km section of the Georgian border with Azerbaijan.
