Report for PACE Focuses on Azerbaijan’s Acute Problems – PACE co-rapporteur

Azerbaijan, Baku, /corr. Trend / A report written by Estonian MP, Andreas Herkel and British MP, Tony Lloyd, for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) focused on the acute problems in Azerbaijan's political life, BNS reports

Herkel reported that the CE is attentively observing developments in the country, where sanctions have been imposed. At the same time the CE's consistent control enables the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan and the consolidation of freedom of press.

Herkel announced that Azerbaijan continues work on the improvement of the court system, which will at first concern the education of lawyers and judges.

"Experience testifies that prior to publication of the report the authorities took easy steps to soften the situation and to achieve a more positive estimation" the Estonian MP noted.

Azerbaijan became a CE member in 2001.
