Azerbaijan Denies Reports of Purchase of Arms From Russia

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry denied the information circulated by Russia regarding the purchase of arms by Azerbaijan from this country. No agreement was signed between the Defense Ministries of both countries regarding the purchasing of arms. The ministry has reported that no arms have been purchased from Russia.

The information published by the Russian press stated that Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement with Russia to purchase new arms at the amount of $40mln. The report stated that Azerbaijan signed an agreement with the Russian Rosoboronexport plant to purchase 70 new APC-80 (armored personnel carrier) in July. A similar agreement was signed with Kazakhstan.

However, Rosoboronexport and the Military industry company refused to divulge any information on the issue. The Russian Federation Defense Ministry official approved the existence of this agreement. The official noted that an additional agreement to purchase APC-80 may be signed with these countries, and Azerbaijan may become the first buyer of the most expensive arms, other than the APC-80, the upgraded APC-90.
