Judges are lawyers, who you should put trust in your fate, Khanlar Hajiyev, a judge of the European Court on Human Rights from Azerbaijan, said.
Hajiyev said in interview for Trend on 21 August that the legal system existing in Azerbaijan is not the best it can be. In Azerbaijan the executive power takes an essential role in the appointment of judges.
With respect to fighting corruption in the courts he said that the judges should be given a full remuneration package. They should be provided accommodation and wages that will satisfy their demands.
"The Government is indeed taking definite measures to increase salaries. I fully agree with those who consider it not to be at a final level," Hajiyev added.
He stressed the importance of values of judges. "If there is corrosion in his mind, no salary will compensate him. The corruption can be removed only in the case if judges are respected people in society with high salaries in the country, while on the other hand they are very honest people," the judge added.
