Azerbaijani Institute of Zoology receives appeals on marsh frog breeding

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21

By Ilhama Isabalayeva – Trend:

The Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan has recently received the appeals in connection with the breeding of marsh frogs (Pelophylax ridibundus), Gulbaniz Gasimova, senior researcher of the Land Vertebrates Laboratory, Ph.D. in Biology, told Trend.

“Proceeding from the appeals, a scientific conclusion was given for collecting reproducing marsh frogs in natural reservoirs to breed them in artificial reservoirs,” senior researcher added.

Gasimova stressed that the Azerbaijani fauna includes 11 amphibians, six of them in various categories have been included in the second edition of Azerbaijan’s "Red Book".

"The most widespread among other five species is the lake frog,” senior researcher said. “The meat of this frog is used for food in some countries. Hunting and export of frogs are allowed upon the law in Turkey’s certain areas, namely, Adana, Afyon, Balikesir, Bingol, Bursa, Edirne, Hatay, Mersin and Yalova. The frog meat is suitable for consumption.”

“A quota was allocated for the lake frog for aquaculture purposes in the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers on Approval of the Permissible "Volume (Quota) for Fishing and Catching Other Aquatic Biological Resources" and "Distribution of Volume (Quota) for Fishing and Catching Other Aquatic Biological Resources by Fishing Techniques" #104 dated March 18, 2019," Gasimova said.

The senior researcher added that not to damage the natural reproduction of marsh frogs during the collection, it is necessary to observe the numerical standard, the natural compactness of the habitat must not be affected.
