Society Materials 30 October 2006 20:17 (UTC +04:00)

Elections to the Press Council of the Country will not take place during 4th Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists, Aflatun Amashov, Chairman of the Council, informed Trend.

He pointed out that the 4th Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists is expected to be held at the end of November/beginning of December 2006. During the sitting of the Board of the Council, the date of the forthcoming conference will be determined. A report on the results of the past 12 months prepared by the Chairman of the Council is expected to be heard during the forthcoming Congress.

According to Mr. Amashov, organizational issues are not expected to be considered during the Congress, i.e. elections to the Council, as well as choosing its new Chairman. According to the Chamber of the Council, elections to the Council are held twice a year. Since elections were held during the 3rd Congress last year, these issues have not been introduced to the agenda of the forthcoming Congress.

During the forthcoming Congress, a report of the Council, as well as the existing situation with journalism, freedom of speech, etc. is expected to be discussed. The Council on Press was registered by the Justice Ministry of the Country as an NGO, and in accordance with the Azerbaijani legislation, such offices are to hold their Congresses every year. That is the reason why the Journalists' Congress is held, pointed out Mr. Amashov.

According to him, proposals on extending the advertisement market of the press, implementation of grant programs connected with the activity of mass media, etc. are expected to be put forward during the forthcoming event. Ibrahim Mammadli, Chairman of The Control Commission is expected to address the participants of the Congress.

According to Mr. Amashov, in comparison with the previous congresses, there will be fewer representatives of mass media in the 4th Congress. Some 230-250 journalists are expected to participate in the forthcoming event.

Documents of the 4th Congress are expected to be adopted as a result of the event.
