International Olympic Committee Approves Decision to Hold Youth Olympic Games

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr Z. Safarov / The members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted at a session in Guatemala on 5 July for holding Youth Olympic Games.

The purpose of the competition involving the youth is an attempt to divert the teenagers from computer monitors and to attract them to doing sports. The first Youth Olympic Games involving 3,200 athletes aged 14-18 are planned to be held in 2010. The venue for the games will be defined in the February of 2008. The first winter Youth Games will take place in 2012. Some 1,000 sportsmen will be in participation.

The President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, stated that the Youth Games will popularize sports among the youth and will improve the health of the young generation in the entire world.
