The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will serve to the growth the transit potential of the regional countries, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov said.

Gurbanov made the remarks in Baku at the meeting with the delegation led by Director General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission Henrik Hololei, the Azerbaijan Railways PR department told Trend.

During the meeting, Gurbanov updated the guests about Azerbaijan’s transport and logistics potential, as well as the work on the implementation of international and regional projects.

Gurbanov spoke about the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, North-South and South-West Transport Corridors and in particular, the BTK railway, which was commissioned in October 2017.

“The BTK railway connects Asia with Europe,” he added. “The Central Asian countries, including Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, as well as Pakistan, China and India showed interest in the project.”

“Cargoes and passengers will be easily transported from Asia to Europe and from Europe to Asia through this railway running through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, and further through the railway tunnel under the Bosphorus,” he said. “The first freight train has already been launched along this line.”

The expansion of bilateral cooperation was also discussed at the meeting.

In his turn, Hololei appreciated the strengthening of Azerbaijan’s transport and logistics potential and the work carried out by the Azerbaijani side in launching the BTK railway and establishing other international transport corridors.

Hololei said that there is a great potential for further expansion of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU.
