WB director for Central Asia arrives in Tashkent

WB Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Shigeo Katsu and former Regional Director for Central Asia Annet Dicson paid an official visit to Tashkent on Feb. 26, the WB Tashkent office reported.

Visit's main goal is to represent new appointed WB Regional Director Moto Konish to Uzbekistan.

"The goal of the two day visit of the Regional Director to Uzbekistan is to discuss 2007 bank's program. The current investment projects and further cooperation between WB and Uzbekistan will be reviewed," WB Tashkent office said.

"The world economy faces serious crisis that has a certain influence on Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan had a propitious macroeconomic situation," Konisi added.

The Uzbek government analyzes the recent changes on regional and international level, as well as carried out active policy to minimize crisis's influence on business and the population.

"Few debts, high level of exchange rate and capability to increase the efficiency of implemented reforms allow to soften the affection of crisis," Konishi said.

Uzbekistan became WB member in 1992. Country's total liabilities to WB are 772 million dollars. WB mission in Uzbekistan participates in economic reforms, as well as supports to upgrade the social sector and infrastructure.
