Kazakhstan plans to produce 300,000 vehicles a year, the Vice-Minister of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Albert Rau said at the Engineering Forum in Astana.

According to him, the country has doubled its production in mechanical engineering over the past three years.

"Much of this was due to railway engineering, but other industries have contributed as well. In 1991, we had 1.4 million vehicles, in 2011 this figure reached four million including 3.5 million motor cars," Rau said.

He also noted that the conditions of the Customs Union and coherent policies have led to a sharp reduction in the influx of used cars in the country and accordingly, sales of new cars have dramatically increased in the past two years.

The Vice-Minister proposed to consider the creation of a test centre for cars in Kazakhstan.

"Test bases are located in Russia and partly in Belarus. Therefore, it is necessary to establish such centres in Kazakhstan. I encourage a joint consideration of the format of the test base to be created in Kazakhstan. The Customs Union regulation on vehicle safety providing for obtaining the approval of the Customs Union for all vehicles comes into force in 2015. The regulation has been adopted and we need to solve this problem by 2015," Rau said.
