Azerbaijan Railways CJSC considers it necessary to organize a meeting of working groups to analyze and evaluate the dispatch of test container trains from Mumbai to Russia via Iran and Azerbaijan, said Javid Gurbanov, head of the Azerbaijani Railways CJSC.

Gurbanov made the remarks while addressing the International Rail Business Forum titled “Strategic partnership 1520: the Caspian region” that kicked off in Baku Nov. 25.

"Several test containers were sent from Mumbai to Russia in October. This was the first consignment sent from India to Russia via Iran and Azerbaijan. I believe that it is necessary to organize a meeting of working groups in the nearest future to analyze and evaluate the dispatch of test cargos, as well as to activate further cargo traffic via this route," he said.

In October, reception, handling and shipment of three out of five 40-foot universal containers, loaded with electrical equipment and spare parts, were carried out in Astara for the first time within the framework of transportations via the North-South transport corridor.

These containers were sent as test ones from the Indian city of Bangalore to Vorsino station in Russia.

The containers were delivered by sea from the Indian city of Mumbai to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, and then sent to Astara by car. From there, the containers were sent to Russia by rail.
