By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the working meeting with the regional administration members expressed dissatisfaction with the weak organization of cotton harvesting, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported Oct. 23.

A rich harvest of cotton was grown, the weather is favorable for the harvesting, however, the low level of work of the regional administration members doesn’t give farmers the opportunity to fulfill contractual obligations, despite that a lot of cotton remains uncollected in the fields, the report said.

The Turkmen president demanded to take the necessary measures for the proper organization of cotton harvesting.

The priority tasks include control over the timely settlements with tenants, who must fully receive payment for their work.

It was earlier reported that Ashgabat intends to stop selling cotton fiber to foreign countries and switch to the full processing of cotton fiber in Turkmenistan.

Some 545,000 hectares of land have been allocated for cotton growing. This year it is planned to harvest 1.050 million tons of cotton, in particular 207,000 tons in Akhal region, 230,000 tons in Dashoguz region, 300,000 tons in Lebap region, 313,000 tons in Mary region.

Last year, the contractual obligations were exceeded, more than 1.1 million tons of raw cotton were harvested.

Cotton is a significant export item of Turkmenistan and is a highly demanded raw material for dozens of modern plants of the dynamically developing textile industry in the country.
