Shymkent became the first city in Kazakhstan and 31-st city worldwide to join the ‘green’ program of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Trend reports with reference to the press office of the city’s akimat (administrative center).

The agreement was made following the visit of the Governor of the city Gabidulla Abdrahimov to London, where he has visited the headquarters of EBRD.

“The signed memorandum will allow to launch and fund the projects on providing lighting to the cities and construction of new sewerage treatment plants. Shymkent will undertake an activity policy on implementation of modern ecology projects in energy and public utilities,” Abdrahimov said.

Furthermore, the cost of the projects within the program equals $100 million.

EBRD Green Cities strives to build a better and more sustainable future for cities and their residents. The program achieves this by identifying, prioritizing and connecting cities’ environmental challenges with sustainable infrastructure investments and policy measures.

The program is already being realized in 20 cities worldwide, including Kyiv, Lvov, Minks and Tbilisi.
