The price of 1 kg of saffron in Iran has decreased by 20-25 percent due to a lack of demand, Deputy Head of Iran's National Saffron Council Gholamreza Miri told Mehr News Agency, Trend reports.

According to him, saffron sales have currently dropped to a minimum.

Miri added that if 1 kg of saffron was being purchased from local producers for 110-115 million rials ($2,600-2,700 at the official exchange rate, $964-1,000 at the black market rate) a month ago, now the same amount is purchased for 90 million rials ($2,100 at the official exchange rate and $789 at the black market rate).

"At present, the minimum price of 1 kilogram of saffron is 70 million rials ($1,600 at the official exchange rate and $614 at the black market rate) and the maximum price is 90 million rials ($2,100 at the official exchange rate, $789 at the black market rate)," he said.

Miri noted that the Iranian Customs have not been providing new statistics on exports lately. The latest available statistics indicated a decline by 15 percent in Iran’s saffron exports over the first three months (March 21 - June 22, 2019) of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2019).

Miri added that saffron harvesting in Iran will begin in early October.
