By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

As many as 830 tons of saffron have been harvested from 310 hectares in Iran’s Semnan province since the beginning of this Iranian year (March 21, 2019), Head of the Semnan province horticulture department Mehdir Garaian said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Garaian noted that by the end of this Iranian year (March 21, 2020), the saffron sowing area in Semnan province is expected to reach 330 hectares.

The department head added that an average of 3 kg of saffron per hectare is harvested in Semnan province.

Garaian noted that if the farmers cooperate with the relevant shopping centers, saffron of the Semnan province can be sold via stock exchange.

“The sowing of saffron on a contractual basis was successfully implemented in Semnan province,” the department head said.

Iran’s Agriculture Ministry pays special attention to the development of sowing on a contractual basis. In this context, companies and shopping centers sign contracts with farmers.

Iran’s Semnan province has 198,000 hectares of arable land. Some 54,000 hectares of this area account for garden plots, 110,000 hectares for sown area and the rest - for non-cultivated area.
