About 14.8 million tons of agricultural products were imported via ports of Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), said Mohammad Ghaseminejad, deputy director of the Khuzestan Agriculture Department, Trend reports citing IRNA.

According to Ghaseminejad, the imported products were mainly rice, soybeans, oilseeds, barley, unprocessed cooking oil, compressed soybeans, corn and sugar.

Ghaseminejad added that more than 95 percent of agricultural products were imported through the Imam Khomeini port.

The official said that about 225,000 tons of products cultivated in Iran’s Khuzestan province were exported last Iranian year.

“The products were mainly exported to Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE,” he noted.

Ghaseminejad said that due to the US sanctions against Iran and in order to protect Iran's food security, the export of most agricultural and livestock products in Khuzestan province was banned.

Iran's Khuzestan province produces 16.2 million tons of agricultural and horticultural products worth 200 trillion rials (about $4.76 billion) a year. In this regard, this province ranks first in Iran.

The US imposed new sanctions on Iran in November 2018. Over the past period, the sanctions affected Iranian oil exports, more than 700 banks, companies and individuals.
