Memorandum to be signed between Iran and Afghanistan

Iran and Afghanistan will sign a memorandum on long-term and comprehensive cooperation in energy and other fields in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020), Minister of Energy of Iran Reza Ardakanian said, Trend reports citing the ministry’s official website.

He made the remark at a joint press conference with Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Mohammad Hanif Atmar.

The minister said that the memorandum will cover the activities of the joint commission of the two countries, a number of joint projects, including cooperation in the field of fossil and alternative renewable energy.

Ardakanian added that one of these projects is the establishment of an Afghan bank’s branch in the Chabahar county of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province. According to Ardakanian, the Khaf-Herat railway is also expected to be commissioned in the autumn of current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020).

The 137-kilometer-long Khaf-Herat railway will also be commissioned in the current Iranian year.

The US imposed new sanctions on Iran in November 2018. Over the past period, the sanctions affected Iranian oil exports, more than 700 banks, companies and individuals.
