The number of beneficiaries of subsistence benefit reached a 7-year high in Georgia in September 2020, Trend reports via Georgian media.

As of September, 502,258 people already receive monthly assistance from the state, which is 13.5 percent of the Georgian population.

The highest number of beneficiaries was recorded in early 2013 when 506,245 persons received the allowance, which was 11.3 percent of the total population. These are the official statistics published by the Social Services Agency on a monthly basis.

However, the minimum amount set by the state (60 lari/$18.07 per person in a month) is often the only income for 140,000 families living in Georgia.

In the last year, the number of beneficiaries has increased by 17 percent compared to September of the previous year.

According to the statistics, the state budget has the most beneficiaries in Tbilisi - 106,000 people. Some 9.5 percent of the total population receives the allowance in the capital, however, the poorest region is Racha-Lechkhumi, where 43 percent of the population depends on subsistence benefit.
