Iran reveals details of saffron exports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 10

Iran exported 324 tons of saffron worth $190 million over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), Spokesman for the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) Rouhollah Latifi said, Trend reports citing the administration’s website.

According to Latifi, Iran's saffron was exported to 60 countries in the last Iranian year. About 78 percent of saffron in terms of value and 79 percent in terms of volume was exported to 5 countries - Hong Kong, the UAE, Spain, China and Afghanistan. Thus, Iran exported 257 tons of saffron worth $149 million to the five countries.

Latifi added that Iran exported 74,578 kg of saffron worth $46.6 million to Hong Kong during the last Iranian year. This accounted for 24.5 percent of Iran's total saffron exports in value and 23 percent in terms of volume.

The official emphasized that Iran also exported 59,791 kg of saffron worth $33.9 million to the UAE last Iranian year. This accounted for 17.8 percent of Iran's total saffron exports in terms of value and 18.4 percent in terms of volume.

“In addition, Iran exported 49,025 kg of saffron worth $26.4 million to Spain within last Iranian year. This accounted for 14 percent of Iran's total saffron exports in terms of value and 15 percent in terms of volume,” he said.

The spokesman noted that moreover, Iran exported 40,139 kg of saffron worth $22.5 million to China in the last Iranian year. This accounted for 11.8 percent of Iran's total saffron exports in terms of value and 12.3 percent in terms of volume.

Latifi said that Iran exported 33,781 kg of saffron worth $19.2 million to Afghanistan over the last Iranian year. This accounted for 10 percent of Iran's total saffron exports in terms of value and 10.4 percent in terms of volume.
