Turkmen enterprise eyes to expand tomato production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 28

By Amina Nazarli - Trend:

Turkmen “Altyn bürgüt” enterprise plans to produce over 2,000 tons of tomatoes during this year, Trend reports referring to “Turkmenistan. Golden Age” online newspaper.

The enterprise's output is increasing, when compared to the harvested tomato crop of 600 tons in 2021.

Located in the Lebap region, the company has 192,000 tomato bushes planted in six greenhouses covering 8.5 hectares.

Each bush yields an average of 13 kilograms of tomatoes, resulting in 230-250 tons of tomatoes per hectare.

From the harvested tomatoes in the enterprise about 80 percent are exported, with the remaining amount being sold on domestic market. In general, exports are carried out to such countries as Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Experts constantly monitor the tomato growth process using specialized equipment. Tomatoes are grown in containers filled with coconut flakes, rather than in the ground, which is another distinguishing feature of these greenhouses.

Agriculture in Turkmenistan is developing rapidly. It is one of the most important sectors of the country's economy. Currently, Turkmenistan is constructing 188 greenhouse complexes covering 1,792 hectares.

Turkmenistan exported 51,314 tons of tomatoes worth more than $56 million to foreign countries during the 11 months of 2021.
