BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 24

By Amina Nazarli - Trend:

Turkmenistan’s cotton exports to the European Union countries increased both in volume and in value in 2021, Trend reports citing Eurostat.

Last year, Turkmenistan exported over 7,408 tons of cotton worth 11.85 million euros to the EU, compared to 5,635 tons worth 8.74 million euros in 2020.

Italy was the leading buyer of Turkmen cotton among EU countries, importing 1,994 tons worth 4.1 million euros in 2021. The country increased its purchase which was 1,331 tons (2.5 million euros) in 2020.

It is followed by Poland, which imported from Turkmenistan over 2,088 tons of cotton worth 3.7 million euros, compared to 1,832 tons (2.9 million euros) in 2020.

Portugal comes next with 1,969 tons of cotton in the amount of 2.86 million euros, compared to 1,500 tons for 2.03 million euros in 2020.

This year Turkmenistan plans to allocate 580,000 hectares of land for cotton sowing across the country, some 40,000 hectares less than in previous years following the government’s plan to increase the lands for sowing potatoes and vegetables and melons, as well as the production of cocoons by 200 tons.
