India to increase investment for development of Iran's Chabahar Port

TEHRAN, Iran, August 22. India is committed to increasing the transit capacity and development of Chabahar port, said the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Trend reports citing ISNA.

Indian and Iranian governments will cooperate to install advanced equipment in Chabahar port and prepare the conditions for increasing cargo transit, said the Indian official during his visit to Chabahar.

India will continue to transform Chabahar Port into a regional and international hub for transit, he said adding that India has made several efforts to develop Chabahar Port's capacity for commodity transit and potential trade via Japan, South Korea, and the Central Asian countries.

A new road map will be implemented for the development of the port to create access to transportation and transit network, the minister pointed out indicating that India is prepared for cooperation with Iran and has a new approach for the development of Chabahar port.

In an effort to invigorate the potential of Chabahar port, the Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal also handed over six mobile harbor cranes to Indian Ports Global Chabahar Free Trade Zone (IPGCFTZ) at the port. Since India Ports Global Private Limited (IPGPL) assumed operations of Shahid Beheshti Port, it has handled over 4.8 million tons of bulk cargo.

According to the Managing Director of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization Ali Akbar Safaee, Iran has invested more than $1 billion in Chabahar port's infrastructures and created good opportunities for private sector investment.
