Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 5 / Trend /

Under a prospective plan until 2015, the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to explore the Babak, Ashrafi and Grabag fields, a company source said on Feb. 5.

"This year we will conduct exploration on the Umid field. Other fields will be explored in stages as part of a prospective plan until 2015," the source said.

Exploration drilling on the Umid field will begin in April.

The Umid-1 platform is being built on the field, the source said.
SOCAR geologists assess the total gas reserves in the field at 200-300 billion cubic meters.
SOCAR needs the platform as part of a program to improve gas production in fields developed using its own funds.
Umid-1 was built on the basis of the unfinished Chiraq-6 platform. It is the largest facility in the program with a height of 72 meters.
There are 57 oil-and-gas fields in Azerbaijan. Eighteen are offshore. SOCAR plans to produce 8.55 million tons of oil and 8 billion cubic meters of gas from the fields in 2009.
