Volume of freights transported by Azerbaijani railway increases

Volume of freight transportation by Azerbaijani railway gradually increases though it was reduced 27 percent as a result of the first six months due to the world financial-economic crisis, chief engineer of Azerbaijani Railway CJSC, Gurban Nazirov, said on September 7. 

"Everything gradually normalizes. Volumes of transportation also increased," Nazirov said.

He said that growth of freight transportation after reduction hits several percents as a result of 7 months.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee, about 11.6 million tons of different freights were transported by railway compared to 16.4 million tons in January-July 2008. 

Freight transportation is planned to reduce 20 percent by late 2009, Nazirov said. Volume of Azerbaijani railway's freight transportation hits 27.4 million tons in 2008.

So, according to the Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee, about 10 million tons of freights were transported by railway as a result of 6 months compared to 13.8 million tons for the similar period of 2008.

Total income of Azerbaijani Railway hits 248.25 million manat in 2008, 164.2 million manat fall on freight transportation, 34.5 million manat - passengers' transportation but rest 50 million manat - income from additional economy.

At present, full-scale length of Azerbaijani railway hits 2950.6 but exploitation ways - 2,122 kilometers.

On September 7, the official exchange rate is 0.8038 manat to $1.
