Syria and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on delivery of Azerbaijani gas to the Middle East and other countries, Syrian Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Hasan Zeinab told Trend over the phone today.

Talks were held recently with Azerbaijani delegation, which included representatives of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, led by Industry and Energy Minister Natig Aliyev in Damascus.

Deliveries of Azerbaijani gas will begin after the completion of the connecting pipeline between Syria and Turkey planned for 2011-2012. The countries will realize the construction of a 63-kilometer gas pipeline between Aleppo, Syria, and Kilis, Turkey, Zeinab said.

Thus, the implementation of gas supplies to Lebanon, Jordan or other Arab countries through Syria will be possible. Syria is also ready to deliver Azerbaijani gas to Europe across the Mediterranean Sea, Zeinab said.

During the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Azerbaijan in July 2009, the parties agreed to supply one billion cubic meters of gas.

The two sides also considered the establishment of oil and gas, equipment, petroleum refining and other joint ventures.
