In the near future, repository of radioactive waste may appear in the vicinity of Farish district of Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan, Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan Begzod Yuldashev said, Trend reports referring to Sputnik Uzbekistan.

He noted that the Institute, together with Uzatom, is discussing the creation of a new waste storage facility. According to Yuldashev, it will be located in the Jizzakh region, where the construction of a nuclear power plant is planned.

As reported, the Senate (the upper house of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan) submitted draft law on nuclear power plants, and as expected it will be adopted in the coming month.

Furthermore, the "Strategy for the Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel and Radioactive Waste" will soon be developed as well.

According to the "Intergovernmental Agreement between Uzbekistan and Russia on cooperation in the construction of nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan", the issues of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management will be regulated by separate contracts.

In early September 2018, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the head of the Government of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan. The State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom plans to build a complex of two 3+ generation units with VVER-1200 reactor units.
