LPG prices rise in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 19

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rose to 1.30 lari (45 cents) in Georgia, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

In the summer of 2019, LPG used as automobile fuel cost 90 tetri (31 cents) per cubic meter.

According to Vano Mtvralashvili, chairman of the Union of Georgian Oil Product Importers, the increase in gas prices is associated with the devaluation of the national currency, a significant increase in demand, and a tightening of tax administration.

“The consumption of liquefied petroleum gas has grown significantly both for automobiles and at households. Recently, the state has increased taxes on this type of fuel; in addition, control has been tightened, and if before a certain part of companies did not pay taxes, now everyone pays,” he said.

At the same time, according to him, there is no external factor in this case, since international prices for liquefied gas have not changed.

“LPG is a new type of fuel for cars, and it is becoming increasingly popular, as it is more profitable both from a financial point of view and for the preservation of the car’s engine. The number of consumers of LPG as automobile fuel currently stands at 7,000, while 3 years ago their number was 1,000,” said the head of the association.
