Construction of a gas-chemical complex for the production of polypropylene in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region is approximately 70 percent ready, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy told Trend.

The complex’ construction has been going on at the National Industrial Petrochemical Technopark Special Economic Zone since 2018. The complex’ capacity is to be 500,000 tons of polypropylene a year. The commissioning of the complex is planned for 2021.

The ministry said that no doubt the global situation related to COVID-19 has negatively affected the project implementation all across the world.

“Activities of many enterprises were suspended during the COVID-related quarantine, the movement of vehicles was restricted, and border checkpoints were closed. To date, issues with the transportation of equipment and materials for the project have been solved. Unhindered passage of goods through the territory of Kazakhstan and of other states through customs posts is ensured,” the ministry said.

Moreover, the ministry said, orders for equipment were placed in various countries.

“The largest order was placed in Germany, Korea, Japan, China and others. The situation with COVID-19 in these countries is also critical and this certainly affected the timing of equipment manufacturing,” the ministry official said.

Thus, the official said the schedule for further implementation of the project, first of all, will depend on the timing of the production of the main equipment, as well as on how the overall situation in the country and the world will develop.
