BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 24

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Coronavirus affected the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan, Dr. of Sciences (Politics), head of the Central Asia sector at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO RAS), Dina Malysheva told Trend.

The negative impact is due to the volatility of world oil and gas prices.

"Such "jumps" reduce revenues from the oil and gas sector, which is the main source of currency inflows in Turkmenistan," Malysheva said.

She noted that Fitch Solutions forecasts an improvement in real GDP growth in Turkmenistan in 2021, which may fall in 2020 also due to the coronavirus.

"The collapse of world oil and gas prices associated with the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 has had a negative impact on the energy sector of Turkmenistan, which has led to a sharp reduction in revenues from the sale of energy resources," Malysheva notes.

At the same time, Malysheva emphasizes that Turkmenistan remains the only state in Central Asia where the official level has not confirmed the spread of Covid-19.

"It is noteworthy that the World Health Organization's mission, which visited Turkmenistan in July 2020 at the invitation of the government, did not register a single confirmed case of Covid-19, highly appreciating the measures taken in the state to prevent respiratory diseases," she added.

Currently, there are no registered cases of coronavirus infection in Turkmenistan.

As it was reported earlier by Senior Emergency Officer at the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) Catherine Smallwood, World Health Organization approves and supports all measures taken by Turkmenistan to prevent the coronavirus outbreak into the country.

In addition, Turkmenistan received a medicines from WHO / Europe.
