The way forward is to keep on working on the decarbonisation of the gas industry with a very clear aim to be able to fully decarbonise the gas industry shortly after 2045, Eurogas President and Executive Vice President of ENGIE, Didier Holleaux told Trend.

“The first step is really to address the Fit For 55 package by the Commission and the Decarbonisation Package that should come on the table shortly, so as to have legislation which is preparing the future market for green gas and decarbonised gas and make sure that biomethane, green hydrogen as well as other decarbonised gas will have a well-functioning market and will play a huge role in the future European economy,” he said.

In the Commission work programme for 2021, the revisions and initiatives linked to the European Green Deal climate actions and in particular the climate target plan's 55 % net reduction target are presented under the Fit for 55 package.

The European Green Deal, presented in the communication (COM(2019)640) of 11 December 2019, sets out a detailed vision to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, safeguard biodiversity, establish a circular economy and eliminate pollution, while boosting the competitiveness of European industry and ensuring a just transition for the regions and workers affected. With the announcement of the European Green Deal, the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged to put forward a comprehensive, responsible plan to increase the European Union's emissions reduction target for 2030.

“We are really shaking up the framework in which our industry is working, and we need to make sure that the next framework is fully adapted to the energy transition we have to handle in the next 20-25 years,” Holleaux noted.
