BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 18. Iran looks to put more biogas power plants into operation in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said, Trend reports citing the ministry.
Mehrabian made the remark at an event regarding the launch of a biogas power plant in Tehran Province on April 18.
He said Iran has the potential to build biogas power plants with a generation capacity of 12-13 megawatt-hours. The minister also ed that Iran plans to increase its alternative energy potential by 10,000 megawatt-hours this year.
He added that the country’s industrial facilities must meet 1 percent of their electricity demand by building renewable energy power plants or buying electricity from the Iran Energy Exchange (IRENEX).
“At the same time, administrative departments must meet 20 percent of their electricity demand by building renewable energy power plants or buying electricity from the IRENEX,” Mehrabian said.
The minister emphasized that there is a imbalance between electricity production and demand in Iran. In order to eliminate this, the Iranian Energy Ministry submitted a program to the Iranian government and parliament.
On April 18, 2023, Iran put a new biogas power plant into use in Tehran Province in the north of the country. The mentioned plant has a capacity to generate 2.4 megawatt-hours of electricity.
In general, Iran’s renewable energy power plants generated a total of 121 million kilowatt-hours of electricity for the 12th month of the last Iranian year (February 20 through March 20, 2023). As a result of the operation of the mentioned power plants for the 12th month, 33 million cubic meters of gas and 27 million liters of water were saved, as well as the release of 68,000 tons of greenhouse gases (CO2) into the environment gas was prevented by the operation of these power plants in Iran.
Currently, the power generation capacity of Iran's all power plants including, thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc. is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent are accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
