Central Bank of Azerbaijan names volume of currency exchange operations

Currency exchange operations in Azerbaijan from January through August 2021 were conducted mainly in US dollars, British pound, euros, and Russian ruble, Trend reports via Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

The purchase of US dollars by local banks increased by 36 percent over the year – from $91.3 million to over $124 million, while sales decreased by 37 percent – from $152 million to $95.3 million.

"During the reporting period, banks purchased about 793,000 British pounds compared to 1.4 million British pounds for the same period of 2020 (a decline of 44 percent), and sold 1.095 million pounds compared to 1.2 million British pounds in 2020 (a decrease of 7.75 percent)," the CBA noted.

During the reporting period, local banks purchased over 6 million euros (an increase of 22 percent year-on-year) and sold about 17 million euros (an increase of 60 percent).

Banks purchased 44 percent more Russian rubles than in 2020 – from 12.6 billion to over 18 billion Russian rubles, while 202 million Russian rubles were sold compared to 190 million Russian rubles for the same period of 2020 (an increase of 6 percent).

The weighted average exchange rate of manat to the dollar from January through August 2021 was 1.6976 manat, to the British pound – 2.3443 manat, to the euro - 2.0118 manat, to the Russian ruble – 0.0227 manat.
