BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 13. The number of charging stations is on the rise, keeping pace with the surge of electric cars in Azerbaijan, as various charging points have popped up in Baku and other major cities.

In light of the situation at hand, Trend conducted a survey of charging stations in Azerbaijan.

These spots are right in the thick of things, close to shopping hubs, cozy hotels, and bustling public areas. At present, there are around 55 to 60 charging points up and running in Baku, with a couple in Sumgayit and about 30 to 35 scattered across the regions. The charging points in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur are set up in the nation's Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Zangilan, Shusha, Khojavand, and Khojaly, covering all the bases.

The charging infrastructure is being expanded through projects involving state bodies and the private sector. Various advocacy programs are being implemented with the support of the state. Charging stations are supported by “green” energy.

Various projects related to the development of renewable energy sources are being implemented in Azerbaijan. Energy production is increased by solar and wind energy projects, which increases the amount of “green” energy entering the grid.

The energy grid is being modernized to facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, which provides a more efficient and reliable source of power.

By utilizing electric vehicles and increasing the utilization of renewable energy sources, the aim is to reduce carbon emissions. This is in line with Azerbaijan's international environmental obligations. The installation of charging points in 147 locations in Azerbaijan is planned for this year. Of these, 69 are in Baku, 58 in the regions, and 20 in Karabakh and East Zangezur.

The establishment of charging stations creates new jobs and promotes investment in the energy sector, which strengthens the local economy.

The Government of Azerbaijan supports various initiatives within the framework of the “green energy” strategy and programs. These programs prioritize energy efficiency and renewable energy development.

The relevant legislation and regulations in the energy sector aim to optimize the use of energy and promote clean energy projects. The number of charging stations will increase with the growing popularity of electric vehicles. The import of electric vehicles to Azerbaijan has increased significantly. If we look at the statistics, in the first 6 months of 2024, 10,464 hybrid and all-electric cars were imported to Azerbaijan. During the same period of 2023, a total of 44,937 passenger cars worth $679.5 million were imported to Azerbaijan, of which 8,453 hybrid and all-electric cars were imported.

The setup of charging stations in Azerbaijan is set to pave the way for energy production to go green and sustainable, while also lending a hand to environmental protection. Successes in this arena also keep the country on the straight and narrow with the International Energy Strategies.
