By Huseyn Veliyev – Trend:

Azerbaijan's mobile operators, Azerfon LLC and Bakcell LLC, reduced the number of base stations in places where they duplicated each other, a source in Azerbaijan’s telecommunications market told Trend Oct. 5.

This became possible thanks to the integration of the operators’ network infrastructure, said the source.

“Currently, the two operators’ networks serve over 6,000 base stations, the interconnection between which is provided through optical infrastructure of the main operator – Azertelekom,” noted the source. “The first thing that was done was that the number of base stations in the places, where they duplicated each other, was reduced. This gives economic advantage to the two operators.”

Azerconnect, which was established jointly by Azerfon and Bakcell, is the regulator of the technical consolidation project. Azerconnect is engaged in technical and service maintenance of networks of the two operators.

The work on uniting the networks of the two operators has been carried out since 2012 and this envisages the joint use of resources of the base stations when it is necessary.
