TEHRAN, Iran, March 16

The TIR Carnets project has been officially commissioned via India – Chabahr – Afghanistan corridor by help of International Road and Transport (IRU) and neighbor countries, said deputy director of Transit Bureau in Iran's Customs.

"Within the project, two containers carrying equipment for production line were successfully transported from Mumbai in India in transit though Iran's Chabahr port to Afghanistan via Dogharoon border," said Mostafa Ayati, Trend reports citing Iran's Customs Administration website.

"The cargo shipment was the first transit from Chabahr customs that was sent to Herat in Afghanistan via Dogharoon border," he said. "The corridor previously operated through the Afghan-Indian route by shipment of 24 TIR Carnets."

"In 2017, Iran operated Slovenia-Italy-Turkey- Bandar Abbas transit project that was a mixed TIR Carnets transportation project between 76 member countries," the official said.

"The purpose of the new route is to develop the eastern India-Chabahar-Afghanistan corridor and eventually reach the CIS through Afghanistan, the deputy director added.

"Iran's Customs is operating TIR Carnets project; the next step will be launch of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC)," he said adding that Iran is one of the effective members in TIR Convention and by operating eTIR projects with Azerbaijan and Turkey it became a leading country in development of transit transportation.
