President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov received the newly appointed coordinator of the UN, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Barrins Jacinto, the Turkmen government said on Wednesday.

The diplomat conveyed greetings and a letter from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, with best wishes to the Turkmen people.

'Emphasising the interest of the United Nations in the further development of a constructive dialogue with Turkmenistan, Barrins noted Turkmenistan's active role in matters of bilateral partnership that meets the objectives of the welfare and prosperity in the regional and global dimension', the media statement said.

Berdymuhamedov noted that cooperation with the UN and its major structures is one of the key vectors of Turkmenistan's foreign policy strategy based on the principles of positive neutrality, peace, good neighbourliness and wide international cooperation.

The parties discussed the priorities for cooperation, expressing confidence that "the partnership, which bears a strategic nature, will continue to develop dynamically in the interest of world peace and prosperity".

Barrins stressed the relevance of international initiatives of official Ashgabat, expressed at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio +20 which was recently held in Rio de Janeiro.

There is a proposal to organise the Caspian Environment Forum (CEF) as a permanent platform for the consideration of environmental issues in the Caspian Basin and to develop relevant proposals and recommendations.

Ashgabat also initiated the establishment of specialised structures such as a regional centre to enable the UN to address climate change. The Turkmen side expressed its readiness to provide the necessary infrastructure in the capital.
