ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, August 24. Iraq has reached an initial agreement with Turkmenistan on the import of gas for the operation of its power plants, Trend reports.
According to the official source, in accordance with the memorandum of cooperation being prepared for this purpose between Turkmenistan and Iraq, an agreement in principle was reached on the import of volumes of gas to meet part of the needs of power plants.
The agreement between the two countries was reached after negotiations in Ashgabat between the delegation of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Electricity, other official representatives of Iraq and officials of the gas sector of Turkmenistan.
Thus, the agreement to be signed between the two countries towards the end of the year will determine the volume of gas to be supplied by Turkmenistan to Iraq.
The energy sector of Turkmenistan is of strategic importance for the development of the country and ensuring its energy independence. Turkmenistan has significant reserves of natural gas, which makes it one of the largest producers and exporters of this resource in the Central Asian region.
