Uzbekistan, UN discuss regional cooperation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has today held a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Noilin Heyzer, the ministry's press-service reported on Wednesday.

According to the information the sides examined priority issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and ESCAP - the UN's largest territorial structure. They also paid attention to promising areas of cooperation aimed at direct need of the regional development.

It was noted the sides are interested in expansion of ties in the spheres of transport, ITC and tourism, trade and investment, promoting environmental protection and social development.

Free industrial-economic zone "Navoi" established in 2008 also opens new opportunities for cooperation.

UN Deputy Secretary General stressed big interest international public shows in international conference starting in Tashkent.

The ESCAP delegation led by Ms Heyzer will attend the international conference "Preparing an educated and intellectually developed generation - as a key condition for sustainable development and modernization of the country," scheduled for February 16-17 in Tashkent.

Meetings and talks in the ministries and departments of Uzbekistan are also scheduled during the visit.
