IAEA to supply Uzbekistan with equipment for research nuclear reactor

The Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan will receive special equipment designed for the automatic power control system of a research nuclear reactor from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by the end of 2021, Trend reports referring to IAEA.

According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to IAEA, over the past ten years, through technical assistance projects, the IAEA has been supporting the modernization of the most important components and systems of the research nuclear reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of our country.

It is noted that within the framework of the projects, a modern control, and protection system was introduced, the dosimetry systems, power supply, emergency ventilation were modernized, and the replacement of cooling system elements is being completed.

It is reported that recently, the IAEA's Department of Technical Cooperation, within the framework of the current technical assistance project on ‘Increasing Nuclear Safety and Increasing the Effective Operation of a Research Nuclear Reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics’, signed a contract with the Russian SNIIP-SISTEMATOM for the supply of special equipment designed for an automatic reactor of INP.

“The equipment, the delivery of which is scheduled by the end of 2021, will increase the safety and reliability of the nuclear reactor and increase its utilization rate,” the message said.

In 2020 alone, the IAEA assisted Uzbekistan in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 by donating test kits to three medical institutions for the detection of coronavirus with a total value of 405,000 euros.

Also, within the framework of technical cooperation projects, a multifunctional diagnostic gamma camera was supplied to the Tashkent Institute of Endocrinology, a decision was made to supply modern equipment for radiation therapy to the Namangan Oncological Center and devices for educational laboratories of Samarkand State University.
