TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, September 8. The International Conference on Food Security is being held in Samarkand on September 7-8, Trend reports.
Based on the results of the conference, the Samarkand Declaration will be adopted. One of the declaration’s resolutions will imply support of small and family owned farms at the state level, expansion their access to production, natural and financial resources.
Other aspects of the Samarkand Declaration establish the following:
- development of agriculture in the most environmentally friendly way that supports biodiversity, with optimal use of water resources
- introduction of comprehensive school nutrition programs
- empowerment of women in rural areas to increase their contribution to agriculture
The International Conference on Food Security is organized by the government of Uzbekistan with technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The participating countries named climate change, depletion of water resources, and land degradation as the topical issues.
Moreover, as part of the International Conference on Food Security, a round table will be being held with the participation of over 150 foreign scientists from 26 countries and 200 scientists from Uzbekistan.
Participants will discuss the possibility of implementing joint research projects.
