Latvia becomes leader in import volumes of Uzbek onions

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, October 2. Latvia became the main buyer of Uzbek onions from August through September 2023, Trend reports.

Overall, Uzbekistan exported 3,200 tons of onions from August through September of 2023, 1,800 tons, or 56 percent, of which were delivered to the Latvian market.

The rest of the Uzbek onion exports were delivered to the markets of the following countries:

Russia – 743 tons

Kyrgyzstan – 286 tons

Poland – 157 tons

United Arab Emirates – 92 tons

Other countries, such as Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, account for the export of the remaining 122 tons of onions from Uzbekistan.

Moreover, this season Latvia has updated the record for the import of onions from Uzbekistan, as since lifting the restrictions on the export of Uzbek onions in mid-March 2023, Latvia has imported a total of 5,700 tons of onions from Uzbekistan. The previous record was fixed in 2019, when the Latvian market received 3,700 tons of Uzbek onions.

In total, Uzbekistan exported 242,600 tons of onions to the markets of 22 countries from mid-March through September 2023. The overall volume of fruit and vegetable exports increased compared to last year’s levels, as Uzbekistan exported $763.6 million worth of fruits and vegetables abroad from January through August 2023, which is 16.5 percent more than in 2022.

Furthermore, Uzbekistan’s trade turnover amounted to $40 billion from January through August 2023, which is 23.2 percent ($7.5 billion) more compared to the same period last year.

Of these, the volume of exports amounted to $16.4 billion, an increase of 27.8 percent compared to 2022 statistics.
