'Iran monitoring regional developments' - Salehi

Iranian caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Tehran is closely following events in the revolutionary uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

Salehi made the remarks late on Saturday, noting that the Islamic Republic has been monitoring developments in the Middle East and North Africa, IRNA reported.

He said that the Egyptian people have relied on their rich culture and wisdom to determine their own destiny.

He went on to say that the Egyptians are getting ready to determine their own destiny and to return their country to the important position in the region it once occupied.

Salehi explained that vigilant nations, inspired by Islamic teachings, make efforts to free themselves from the domination of the hegemonic powers to achieve real independence.

Egypt has been the scene of violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces over the past few days.

The number of people killed in protests since Friday is reported to be at least 100. More than 2,000 were also injured in uprisings that have rocked Cairo, Suez, and Alexandria, PressTV reported.
