The representatives of Iranian opposition "Green Movement" launched a campaign to collect signatures in favor of releasing the Movement leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, as well as their spouses from house arrest, the campaign's opposition website reported.
The campaign is underway since late July and will continue for three weeks. So far, signatures of 280 people have been collected, who also include political and cultural figures, as well as representatives of 21 groups and organizations.
An open letter, under which the signatures are collected, contains demands to release the opposition movement's leaders from house arrest, which has already lasted for six months.
At the end of the campaign, the letter will be sent to the heads of international organizations, including the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and representatives of the UN Security Council member countries.
Mousavi and Karroubi were arrested after sending a letter to the Interior Ministry on Feb. 7 asking that they and their supporters be granted permission to hold a rally on Imam Hossein and Azadi squares in support of the Egyptian and Tunisian peoples on Feb.14.
