EU confirms upcoming meeting of Iran’s FM and Ashton

Meeting of head of EU diplomacy Catherine Ashton and Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif will be held Sept.17 in New York on the eve of negotiations with the P5+1 mediators and Tehran on the nuclear issue, RIA Novosti reported.

The next meeting of the international mediators and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program will be held in New York Sept.18. "The High Representative Ashton will hold a bilateral meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif on Wednesday, Sept. 17," the statement said.

Israel, the United States and other Western countries accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying its nuclear program is aimed solely at meeting the country's electricity needs. The United States imposed sanctions against Iran through the UN and bilateral sanctions, which have already caused substantial damage to the economy of the country.

In accordance with the joint plan of action adopted November 24, 2013 in Geneva, the P5+1 mediators (Russia, USA, Britain, France, China and Germany) and Iran have agreed July 20 to adjust a document guaranteeing the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against the Islamic Republic. But then the deadline was postponed for four months, until November.
