Agriculture in Azerbaijan (january-september 2013)

Agricultural output at current prices amounted to 4.438.4 billion manat in Azerbaijan in January - September or by 4.9 percent more compared to the same period of 2012. The growth of crop production was 4.3 percent, livestock production - 5.5 percent.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, as of October 1, around 2.752.1 million tons of crop were collected from 1.034.5 million hectares of sown area of cereals (excluding corn) or by 5.1 percent more than in the same period of last year (for comparison, around 2.619 million tons of grain crop in January-September 2012). On average, the crop yield per hectare hit 26.6 quintal.

Corn production reached 145,500 tons. The crop yield per hectare was 50.5 percent. Grain and legume collection increased by 4.9 percent and reached 2.897.6 million tons in Azerbaijan including corn. The annual demand for food grain is about 1.6 million tons.

As of October 1, the crop is being gathered in the country.

Thus, 2,700 tons of tobacco leaf (dry weight) and 17,700 tons of sunflower were collected during the reporting period. The processing enterprises sold 6,800 tons of raw cotton.

The farms produced 530,100 tons of fruits and berries (by 13,300 tons or 2.6 percent more than in the same period of 2012), 104,300 tons of grapes (by 5,000 tons or 5 percent more per year) and 474.5 tons of tea leaf.

The autumn-winter field work is underway in Azerbaijan to gather crop next year. Around 541,900 hectares were plowed, which is 2.3 percent more than in the same period of last year. The sowing operations were carried out in a​​ 39,200 hectare area, including the wheat area - 15,500 hectares (share - 39.4 percent), barley, 23,800 hectares (60.6 percent).

The country produced 358,100 tons of meat (live weight), 1.385.5 million tons of milk, 1.043.4 million eggs, 16.3 tons of wool during the reporting period. Meat production increased by 3.8 percent, milk - by 6.6 percent, eggs - by 15.1 percent, wool - 2.8 percent in January-September this year compared to the same period of 2012.

There were 2.728.7 million heads of cattle, including 1.311.700 million cows and buffaloes, 8.770.9 million sheep and goats in the Azerbaijani livestock sector in January-September 2013.
