A group of female prisoners with children began a hunger strike in a women's prison in Tbilisi on Monday.

The head of the Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights NGO, Nana Kakabadze, told Trend that Iya Khvichia, Isolda Kvelidze, Tamara Bartaya, Elena Tushishvili and Seda Tsogomonyan have young children under the age of three. The prison administration are transferring the children to an orphanage.

"The prisoners urge to form legislation to keep their children with them," she said.

The prisoners will have to stay in prison for a long time, she said.
Nobody knows when they will see their children. They hope to attract public and media attention to this problem.

She said these prisoners made a request to the Georgian authorities and the president's wife Sandra Roelofs to help them. However, they have received no answer.
