BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 18. Georgia has launched a new program to assist the owners of agricultural land, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said at the governmental meeting today, Trend reports via Georgian media.

According to the PM, Georgia’s farmers will receive financial assistance in the amount of 300 Georgian lari ($97) per hectare.

In particular, the subsidy will be given to landowners from 0.5 to 1.25 hectares. The beneficiaries will have this amount on the special credit card and will be able to use it only to buy agricultural goods, Garibashvili said.

The program is aimed at reducing the cost of agricultural production. Up to 300,000, Georgia farmers will benefit from this assistance, and the total cost of the project will be 35 million Georgian lari ($11.4 million).

Meanwhile, recently, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Otar Shamugia announced that Georgia’s agriculture sector saw a substantial production increase over the past year, and is striving for further development.
