Jordan stresses respect for Tunisian people's will

The Jordanian government on Saturday said it respects the will of the Tunisian people and called on all Tunisian political powers to unite to preserve the security of their country and protect its citizens, Xinhua reported.

In a statement published by the state-run Petra news agency, Jordan's Foreign Ministry said the Arab kingdom is following up " closely and with due attention" the situation in Tunisia.

Jordan, which called for consensus among all political powers in Tunisia, said it respects the choice of the Tunisian people and supports them in overcoming the current circumstances, the statement indicated.

The Arab kingdom said it is confident that the Tunisian people are keen on restoring calm to their country.

In the statement, the Jordanian government offered condolences over the death of several Tunisians in protests witnessed recently in the country.

The Tunisian Constitutional Council, the country's highest legal authority on constitutional issues, decided on Saturday to oust ex-president Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali from power. Parliament Speaker Fouad Mebazaa is now in power as acting president until an election is called.

Ousted Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled the country on Friday afternoon following massive demonstrations that urged him to step down, despite his announcement on Thursday that he would not run for another term in 2014.
