United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay asked the UN Security Council on Monday to refer severe human rights violations in Syria to the International Criminal Court, DPA reported.
"In my view, both government forces and the armed opposition have been involved in actions harming civilians, and those responsible for attacks against civilians must be held accountable," Pillay said after making a report to the 15-nation council in New York.
"Evidence pointed to crime against humanity."
French UN Ambassador Gerard Araud said his government supports Pillay's request for ICC prosecution of the killings in Syria.
